ASABE looks into available water for irrigation use

The organization is looking for industry participants to help with standard development.

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated a project to develop a new standard, S623, Standardized Procedure for Determining Available Water for Landscapes and Estimating Landscape Water Use. Those with interest and expertise in the subject matter are invited to participate in the project.

As the demand on water resources and the importance of water use efficiency grows, water agencies, regulators, land owners, landscape managers, and others require a standardized process to determine landscape water supply and demands to address local, regional and national objectives.  The new document will standardize the ways in which both the available water resources and the irrigation requirements are quantified for landscape purposes.

ASABE is recognized worldwide as a standards developing organization for food, agricultural, and biological systems, with more than 240 standards currently in publication. Conformance to ASABE standards is voluntary, except where required by state, provincial, or other governmental requirements, and the documents are developed by consensus in accordance with procedures approved by the American National Standards Institute.

For information on, or to participate in the development of this ASABE standard, contact Travis Tsunemori (269-932-7009, travist@asabe.org). A current listing of all ASABE standards projects can be found on the ASABE website.

The Irrigation Association has played a large role in ASABE’s effort and is encouraging members to participate in the development of the standard.

IA's standards and codes initiative is a key strategic focus of the association and involves working with and funding organizations such as ASABE to ensure the industry is represented wherever codes and standards are debated and formulated.
