Workers plan Day Without Immigrants strike

Activists are calling for immigrants of all kinds to stay home from work or school, close their businesses for the day and refrain from buying anything on Thursday in response to President Donald Trump's immigration policies. It is unknown how many will participate.

The protest, organized mainly on social media and through word of mouth, is in opposition to Trump's plans to build a wall along the Mexican border, use “extreme vetting” and generally crack down on those who are in the country illegally. The goal is to show demonstrate the impact immigrants, both legal and illegal, have on daily life.

On Monday, 10,000 to 20,000 demonstrators took to the streets in Milwaukee in a similar protest, according to the Chicago Tribune. 

Several Washington, D.C., restaurants plan to close for the day in solidarity with their immigrant staff members, according to the local NBC station.

A similar strike was held in 2006, protesting U.S. immigration reform measures. Now known as the Great American Boycott, it included rallies in more than 50 cities including Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, Seattle, New York and Chicago.

It is estimated that more than 1 million took to the streets to protest a bill that would have criminalized illegal immigrants and strengthened border control.
