SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. -- February 14 will live with Francisco "Franky" Garcia Lopez forever. While picnicking with his family at Weston Regional Park in Weston, Florida, a GreenSource Landscape and Sports Turf employee approached Lopez to see if he could assist in locating a child missing within the park. GreenSource has been the park operations provider since 2006 while Lopez, 27, has been an employee at GreenSource since Sept. 2014.
As Lopez was searching the 106-acre park, he heard a distant crying. As he approached one of the lakes within the park, he noticed a small head bobbing in and out of the water. He immediately jumped into the lake to save the child's life. While attempting to rescue the child, it became apparent that he was tangled in weeds and debris twenty feet from the shoreline. Lopez had to dive underwater to free the boy from the vegetation that was holding him under. Lopez eventually got out of the water with the child in tow, at which time he was taken by Weston Fire Rescue to the hospital to be examined.
All went well with the young man and he is currently reunited with his family.
