PLANET hosts children's essay contest

Winners of the contest will have the opportunity to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns during Renewal & Remembrance.

PLANET’s annual Renewal & Remembrance and Legislative Day on the Hill will be held July 25-27 in Washington. Attendees will have the opportunity to have their voices heard on Capitol Hill and honor veterans and leaders by helping to beautify the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.

As part of PLANET’s Renewal & Remembrance, the Children’s Program allows the children of PLANET members to participate in plantings on the cemetery grounds and to visit the Tomb of the Unknowns. Each year, one of the children participating in the program is selected to help lay a wreath at the tomb to honor those buried there.

This year, PLANET is holding an essay contest for children ages 10–12, who will be attending Renewal & Remembrance. These children are asked to submit an essay that explains why they feel Arlington National Cemetery is so important to our nation and why they should be chosen to lay the wreath. Two winners will be chosen by June 1, and they will be featured on PLANET’s Renewal & Remembrance website, as well as highlighted in PLANET News and e-newsletter, Front Page News.

Criteria:
•    Applicants should be 10–12 years old.
•    Essay should be 600 words or less and be in a neat, legible format.
•    Essay should be submitted to Heather Finney by May 10, 2011.
