Company plants tree for Arbor Day

Almstead Tree & Shrub Care Company donated the River Birch tree to the Town of Rye.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Almstead Tree & Shrub Care Company celebrated Arbor Day in the Town of Rye this year by donating and planting an 8-foot River Birch tree in Crawford Park, which occupies more than 36 acres between North Ridge Street and Lincoln Avenue in Rye Brook. Almstead will also take responsibility for pruning and maintaining the tree in the coming years.

River Birch (Betula nigra) is a medium-sized, fast-growing, deciduous tree that thrives in the region. Young trees have multi-colored peeling bark in shades of tan, brown, pink and cream. Older trees develop grey, flaky bark on the lower trunks.

“Planting trees and taking part in local events in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut during Arbor Week is a tradition for us,” said Michael Almstead, vice president of Almstead. “It’s our way of giving back to the communities we serve.”

The tree planting, which took place on Arbor Day, was coordinated with the Town of Rye, and The Friends of Crawford Park, an all-volunteer organization that maintains and beautifies the park.

“We are so happy to have Almstead donate this tree,” said Laura Klein, from The Friends of Crawford Park. “We recently lost some trees by Lincoln Avenue. It stays pretty wet down there so we thought a River Birch would be a great choice.”
