ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – As part of the 5th annual PLANET Day of Service, Heads Up Landscape Contractors performed irrigation preparation and installation at Seed2Need on April 22, 2014. This project was part of the annual PLANET event that gives professionals in the landscape industry an opportunity to plan, organize and carry out volunteer service projects that benefit their own communities. Hundreds of volunteer landscape projects take place each year at schools, community parks, military memorials, libraries and museums across the country.
“I heard about Seed2Need from our purchaser at Heads Up,” said Trenton Spratling, residential sales. “After contacting them we determined we could come help them with the installation of their irrigation system. We had six employees go out at different times during the day to lend a hand.”
The Day of Service is organized by PLANET, the national trade association representing more than 100,000 landscape industry professionals, who create and maintain healthy, green living spaces for communities across America. The Heads Up employees who participated this year were David Batista, Brandy Marr, Eddie Padilla, Daniel Reeves, Renee Schmitt, and Trenton Spratling.
Seed2Need is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing food insecurity in New Mexico by growing gardens to generate produce for local food pantries and soup kitchens. This collaborative effort between the Sandoval County Master Gardeners (SCMG), property owners in the village of Corrales, volunteer groups and numerous private citizens from Corrales, Rio Rancho, Placitas and Albuquerque, has been planting gardens in Corrales since 2008. The group also gleans fruit from local orchards and solicits produce donations from the customers and vendors at the Corrales Grower's Market every Sunday from July through October.
