It's “Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids.” Awareness Week

July 10-16 will be a week dedicated to raising awareness and funding for healthy, safe green spaces for kids.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — With more than a million and a half acres of parkland in the U.S. you would assume that playing outdoors is a no-brainer for children, but that is not the case.

Childhood and adolescence obesity rates have doubled and quadrupled in the past 30 years and that can be traced, in part, to the athletic and recreational green spaces enjoyed by previous generations being outdated, unsafe and in need of renovation.

To raise awareness and funding to reverse this trend, Project EverGreen is designating July 10-16 as National “Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids.” Awareness Week. The week will raise recognition of the program and spotlight the program’s efforts to provide healthy, safe athletic and recreational green spaces for America’s children.

“Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids.” is a nationwide initiative to renovate and revitalize athletic and recreational green spaces in urban communities to ensure children have access to a safe place to play and exercise. Managed yards, parks and athletic fields not only promote a healthier lifestyle, but contribute to economic growth, community development and benefit the environment.

“Investing in the renovation and revitalization of athletic and recreational green spaces is an investment in a healthier future for children across the country,” said Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen. “Our goal is to make sure that safe, modern green space is available so children can make exercise, athletics and recreation a part of their daily lives.”

Since the program’s inception in 2015, renovation projects covering more than 607,000 sq. ft. of athletic and recreational green spaces have been completed across the country including Atlanta; Houston, San Antonio, Round Rock and Ft. Worth, Texas; North Chicago, Il.; Cleveland; Durham and Greensboro, N.C.; Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
