Californians can no longer be fined for brown lawns

A bill protecting residents faced no dissent.

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill last month that prohibits local governments from fining residents for allowing their lawns to go brown. Now in the fourth year of a severe drought, many cities in the state have been warning or issuing fines to residents for violating local maintenance ordinances.

The bill, introduced by Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown from San Bernadino, passed both houses without dissent.
