Davey ranks as 13th largest employee-owned company

The National Center for Employee Ownership added the company to its top 100 list.

KENT, Ohio — The Davey Tree Expert Company ranked as the 13th largest employee-owned company in the United States, based on a report from the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO). The NCEO’s 2017 Employee Ownership 100 list includes the nation’s largest companies that are at least 50 percent owned by an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) or other broad-based employee ownership plan.

Davey has been an employee-owned company for 38 years after employees purchased the company from the John Davey family. With more than 9,000 employees, the company continues to progress and grow under its ESOP plan.

“The entrepreneurial attitude that accompanies employee ownership is a driving factor in Davey’s success,” said Pat Covey, Davey’s president and CEO. “Fostering and encouraging that employee-ownership culture is integral to the Davey Company’s continued growth and strong performance.”

Collectively the top 100 employee-owned companies on the 2017 list employ more than 615,000 people. Across the U.S., there are about 6,700 ESOPs covering more than 14 million participants, NCEO reported. The full research and list can be found here.
