Village Nurseries introduces plant offerings

The seven new plants are being introduced for landscape professionals in the western U.S.

ORANGE, Calif. – Village Nurseries Wholesale is now offering landscape architects and designers in the western states seven new grasses, perennials and shrubs that represent the company’s continuing investment in plant introductions and its Save Water, Stay Green initiative.

The new offerings include:
• Cousin Itt Little River Wattle (Acacia cognata ‘ACCOG01’ PP#25,133)
This low growing, mounding shrub with emerald green foliage will grow in sun or shade. The new growth is light green hardening to a deep green. The plant holds this color during the cooler months of the year. Cousin Itt shows high disease resistance as well as being drought tolerant, once established, and will look as beautiful in containers as in mass on a slope. Low maintenance, very little pruning is required.

• Blonde Ambition Blue Grama Grass (Bouteloua gracilis ‘Blonde ambition’ PP#22,048)
A long-lived warm season grass with fine-textured green leaves, it stays low at 2 to 2.5 feet tall. Beginning in early to mid-summer, the wheat-colored seed heads sway in the breeze about 18” to 20” above the foliage. The plant has not displayed any invasive tendencies. Native to the Southwest, this is a tough grass that can handle drought as well as extremely cold temperatures.

• Clarity Blue Dianella (Dianella hybrid ‘DP401’)
This is an easy care plant and a member of the Sunset Western Garden Collection. It’s a tough new hybrid that gets strong Phormium-like growth from 'Cassa Blue' and deep blue color from 'Utopia'. It also works well with succulents and looks excellent in containers.

• ‘Meerlo’ Lavender (Lavandula allardi 'Meerlo' PP#25,559)

Lavandula allardi are the most heat, humidity and water-wise lavenders the company grows. These vigorous plants hold their beautifully variegated and highly fragrant foliage and sport pale blue flowers in the summer. They grow 2-3' tall by 2-2.5' wide, prefer full sun to part shade, and are low maintenance. This variety is a recent addition to the Sunset Western Garden Collection.

• ‘Sunshine’ Ligustrum (Ligustrum sinensis 'Sunshine' PP#20,379)
As Ligustrum is known to be, this is a very versatile and tough plant. Easy care, colorful, water-wise and non-invasive, it will work well in any full sun position within several miles of the coast. The further inland, the plant will need protection from the late afternoon sun. Its golden foliage provides year-round interest. At 3-5' tall by 3-4' wide, it makes an excellent foundation, border, or accent plant. It is also a stunning addition to the Sunset Western Garden Collection.

• Plumetastic Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris ‘Irvine’)
Stately and showy foliage, with an upright and slightly arching form, its glittering clouds of vivid purple-pink plumes emerge in late summer and persist through fall. It has an outstanding texture for specimen plant or en masse in borders, meadows and native gardens. This beauty is also part of the Monrovia Collection and is a Village Nurseries semi-exclusive.

• ‘Lemon Lime’ Nandina (Nandina domestica 'Lemon-Lime’ PP#24,749)
The new growth on the 3-4' tall by 3-4' wide shrub is chartreuse that fades to a dark green, providing elegant and soft tones, while also adding a pop of color. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is hardy to -10°F. It is low maintenance, drought tolerant and even fire resistant. This is another new member of the Sunset Western Garden Collection.
