Ocala, Fla.-based Ft. McCoy Farms has been selected as a licensed sod producer of UltimateFlora Zoysia, an environmentally friendly turfgrass.
UltimateFlora Zoysia is marketed by Environmental Turf Inc. and was developed by the University of Florida as an envrionmentally friendly alternative to replace water-intensive St. Augustine grass in Florida. The grass requires less water and less fertilizer than St. Augustine grass, is drought resistant, is resistant to the chinch bug and, overall, is considered a low-maintenance grass. University tests that compared St. Augustine grass and UltimateFlora Zoysia found the latter ranks better for shade tolerance and wear tolerance.
McCoy farms is operated by Don Johnson and Travis Johnson. Don Johnson is a founding member of the Florida Sod Producers Association and has 28 years of experience in the turf industry.
"UltimateFlora Zoysia is very well suited for our market here in the Ocala area," he said. "It looks great and can survive a drought."
