WASHINGTON – The Horticulture Research Institute, the research affiliate of the American Nursery & Landscape Association awarded the 2010 Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow Jr. Scholarship to Amanda Lilly.
Lilly, a second year graduate student at City College of New York, received a $2,000 scholarship in support of her Master's in Landscape Architecture.
Addressing her interest in her chosen field Lilly said, “My undergraduate degree is in architecture. However, while I was in school, and during my years working with a professional architecture firm, I realized that my design interests were most focused in creating outdoor spaces. This drive and determination to design beautiful and ecological green spaces, coupled with a passionate commitment to the environment as our species continues to develop on the land, led me to ultimately pursue the rewarding and challenging profession of Landscape Architecture.”
“This scholarship is important to me because I am financing my education without help from family or other outside sources. These are hard economic times for everyone and education is particularly expensive, so this scholarship will help me pay for my living expenses here in New York as well as books and supplies that I need along the way. I am very grateful for the Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow Jr. Scholarship. I am also grateful for Bigelow Nursery’s dedication to providing assistance to horticultural and landscape students. I feel that there is paramount importance in fostering educated and compassionate persons in these fields if we are to lead the world in creating places for people to live in a way that is thoughtful, responsible and of course, beautiful and green.”
The Bigelow Scholarship was established in 1988 by the Bigelow family of Bigelow Nurseries in Northboro, Mass., to aid students from New England who seek a career in horticulture.
