WNLA workshops and classes receive CEU approval

Two workshops and three educational sessions now have Continuing Education Unit distinction.

The Western Nursery & Landscape Association has announced two workshops and three educational sessions at the 2019 Western in Kansas City have been approved by the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System for CEUs.

Perennial Garden Design with Affection and Planting Through Self Discovery, a workshop with Roy Diblik, Northwind Perennial Farm, has been approved for three CEUs. Simply choosing plants from character reference lists, plant catalogs and books; then basing their relationships on flower color, bloom time and the awareness of simple site conditions can only produce plantings that favor the moment, the ribbon cutting.
The class highlights the importance of affection and the beauty of self-discovery in coming to know plants,

creating intimate plant communities and the joy of caring for perennial plantings.

Invasive Plants & the Horticulture Industry: An interdisciplinary presentation and panel discussion, has been approved for two CEUs. In this session, horticulture and conservation professionals discuss the impacts of invasive plants on the natural world and the horticulture industry's role in helping stop the spread while also pursuing profitable opportunities to manage the invasion.

Native Alternatives to Standard Non-Natives and Invasives has been approved for one CEU. The threat of invasive plants to the natural world is daunting, and shifting away from the sale of these species will be an adjustment to the horticulture industry. However, this class shows that the shift also presents an exciting economic opportunity for plant sellers to become suppliers of diverse and versatile native plants-including groundcovers, perennials, shrubs, and trees.

Stay Relevant with the Power of Plants, with Shannon Currey, the marketing director at Hoffman Nursery, has been approved for one CEU. How can we position our plants and services as a necessity and keep them off the budgetary chopping block? How can we better promote the power of plants? Taking a broad approach that includes purpose and functionality can keep the horticulture industry vital and relevant.

The Sheridan Nurseries' Retail Way to Success, a workshop with Art Vanden Enden, has been approved for three CEUs. Art was appointed Sheridan Nurseries vice president of garden centre operations in 2010. His direct responsibility is over eight retail garden centres, as well as three landscape supply yards and the landscape design division.

The Western is the five-state regional conference of the Western Nursery & Landscape Association. Detailed information can be found at wnla.org.
