Mariani Landscape Helps Restore Nature Preserve in Illinois

The Chicagoland-area company recently assisted Liberty Prairie Conservancy in the restoration of natural areas at Oak Openings, a 33-acre nature preserve in Grayslake.

Mariani Landscape, a Chicagoland-area provider of landscape design, installation and maintenance services for residential clients, recently assisted Liberty Prairie Conservancy in the restoration of natural areas at Oak Openings, a 33-acre nature preserve in Grayslake.

Mariani donated 18 burr oak trees and supplied labor to clear away invasive species and establish a native oak savanna on a four-acre section of the nature preserve.

“Not only did Mariani take an unsightly, yet highly visible area and make it absolutely beautiful, they used the utmost care for the environment in the process,” says Sarah Surroz, Stewardship and Education Coordinator for Liberty Prairie Conservancy, which was established in 1995 by citizens concerned about development pressures in central Lake County.

“We are honored to help Liberty Prairie Conservancy because they provide educational opportunities for others to gain the knowledge and skills needed to preserve open space,” says Mariani President Fred Wacker.

Prior to the restoration, the site had several potholes inhabited by a small population of frogs. Mariani Landscape, along with a group of children, rescued the frogs before the potholes were graded over.

“By considering the preserves natural environment and showing extra care for its flora and fauna, we were able to help the conservancy create a beautiful, natural space that is enjoyed by all,” says Wacker.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008, Mariani Landscape has always had a strong sense of community and donates its services to a number of organizations each year.
