LANSING, M.I. – The Michigan Turfgrass Foundation has announced the appointment of Thomas Smith as its new executive director.
“MTF is very fortunate to be able to replace Gordon LaFontaine with a man with the vast industry experience and leadership that Tom will provide,” explained MTF President Gerry Grossi.
Smith served nine years on the Foundation’s board of directors and held the office of president. He also served last year as the board’s assistant executive director.
”This experience will be invaluable to the Foundation as we meet the challenges of our industry,” Grossi noted, referring to Smith’s extensive MTF experience.
Smith’s industry-related experience – which adds up to nearly 30 years – includes working as the owner of Grass Roots, an East Lansing design and build company. He has also worked in the golf industry and as a research and teaching assistant at MSU. He has taught numerous industry classes throughout the state.
“The MTF is the premier turfgrass foundation in the world,” Smith commented. “I am honored and enthused to continue the legacy of Gordon LaFontaine and take the Foundation to the next level in support of turfgrass teaching, research and extension.”
