Mid-Am Plans to Teach Growers

A grower-focused conference is the latest addition to the Mid-Am Horticultural Trade Show.

The Mid-Am Horticultural Trade Show has added a new conference to next year’s educational lineup. The Mid-Am show, slated for January 2004 in Chicago, will include a greenhouse growers’ conference. Focused on issues pertinent to the unique needs of industry growers, the new offering will add a new dimension to the three-day trade show.

The greenhouse growers’ conference is scheduled for the afternoon of Jan. 15, with sessions presented concurrently. Educational sessions will address a variety of topics, including management, human resources and propagation issues.

“The program is looking great,” described Mid-Am Persident Larry Thalmann III of Chalet Nursery and Garden Shop, Wilmette, Ill. “In addition to a wealth of information that we already have, greenhouse growers have provided some valuable suggestions for topics and speakers.”

This new grower-focused conference was created to meet the increasing demand for seminars catering to greenhouse growers in the Midwest.

“There is no seminar geared toward growers here in the Midwest,” Thalmann observed. “Bringing a greenhouse growers’ conference here to the area satisfies a need by offering educational programming without requiring a large travel budget. The local conference will allow Midwesterners to attend for the day, taking advantage of the trade show in the morning and the conference in the afternoon.”

Specific topics may include new perennials and annuals, plant diseases and treatment and greenhouse management. Other topics may include a review of the poinsettia-growing season and creating greenhouse emergency procedures for natural disasters.

The growers’ conference will include admission to the trade show for all three days. Those interested in attending should visit the Mid-Am Web site for more information.
