Mulch Piles Going Up in Smoke

Decorative mulch might not be considered a novel approach to suburban landscaping. But for some, it's become the hottest thing to hit the lawn.

The Naperville, Ill., Fire Department has responded to 32 mulch and landscaping material fires since Jan. 1, compared to 22 during the same period in 2006, according to Assistant Fire Chief Michael Zywanski.

The flare-up has been noted by neighboring communities.
