ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Harry D. Niemczyk, Ph.D.
Dr. Harry Niemczyk is Emeritus Professor Turfgrass Entomology at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, The Ohio State University, Wooster, Ohio. A member of the faculty at OARDC/OSU since 1964 and Professor since 1971, Dr. Niemczyk received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University. His research on behavior and mobility pesticides in turf and the biology, ecology, and control of insects and other arthropods in turfgrass has been published in 61 scientific papers and 68 trade publication articles. He was coeditor and author of the book Advances in Turfgrass Entomology and sole author of the first edition of Destructive Turf Insects. He practices his profession as a private consultant to the turfgrass management industry, develops training and insect control programs for lawn care firms, sod farms and golf courses and presents seminars on turfgrass insects. He is a member of the Entomological Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, International Turfgrass Society, and the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation. Dr. Niemczyk received the Professional Excellence, Man of the Year, and Lifetime Membership awards from the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation. He serves as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation, is a member of the Education Staff of the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America and serves on the Board of Directors of the Musser International Turf Foundation.
David J. Shetlar, Ph.D.
Dr. David Shetlar is Associate Professor of Landscape Entomology at The Ohio State University. He performs turfgrass entomological research at The Ohio State University, Ohio Turfgrass Foundation, Turfgrass Research and Education Facility, with his extension and teaching efforts based in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Shetlar received his B.S. and M.S. in zoology from the University of Oklahoma and his Ph.D. in entomology from Penn State. He was an assistant professor of entomology at Penn State from 1978 to 1983. He then joined the ChemLawn Research and Development Center in 1984 as Research Scientist, Turfgrass Entomology. Here he had responsibilities to develop new products and programs for management of turfgrass pests in North America. In 1990, he joined The Ohio State University. His research has centered on the ecology and behavior of bluegrass billbug, black cutworm and sod webworms. He is actively involved in developing control programs, especially with new control materials, and evaluating predictive models that estimate turfgrass insect activity periods. He has presented numerous seminars and talks to the turfgrass industry on turfgrass insects. His work has been published in scientific journals and trade publications. He is co-author of three books: Managing Turfgrass Pests, Turfgrass Insect and Mite Manual and Handbook of Turfgrass Insect Pests.
