Applications are now being accepted for the city of Henderson, Nev., turf removal program which helps to cover the cost of converting turf to desert landscaping.
Kathleen Richards, senior public information specialist for the Henderson department of utility services explained that the turf removal program can be a big help to families who would like to be a part of the Water Smart program, but can't afford to do it right now.
"It can be a little bit intimidating because people don't realize what the up-front cost can be to make the conversion. This program can help you pay for it all at once without having to pay for it all yourself right away," Richards said.
The goal of the pilot program is to help those following Water Smart guidelines. City of Henderson representatives say 30 percent of those who begin the conversion process end up dropping out.
To receive a loan and begin conversion, you must be a Henderson resident and pass a minimum credit check. The credit check is not income restrictive.
Applicants must also follow the Southern Nevada Water Authority Water Smart guidelines and the home they are converting must be their primary residence.
Residents can receive up to $5,000 with a 3-percent interest rate if they meet the minimum requirements.
Sept. 1 also marked the beginning of fall watering schedules for the entire valley. Residents may only run their sprinklers three times a week, or they could be fined.
"This is the hardest time of year - people always forget to turn their watering schedules back because it's still warm out so they think they should still be able to water seven days a week," Richards said.
