It's one thing to say you want to specialize, but actions speak louder than words.
New Vista Enterprises caters to clients who appreciate a high level of detailed craftsmanship. Our work includes outdoor fireplaces, waterfalls, brick and stone patios and pool surrounds.
About 50 to 60 percent of the work we do is high-end landscape, design and outdoor construction. Two years ago that percentage was just a dream. I've wanted to focus on innovative design, planning and construction for eight years, ever since I got a degree in horticulture. Instead, I used to take all sorts of jobs, trying to build my business, including small tilling jobs, preparing people's gardens for spring planting.
My biggest mistake was taking too long to make a commitment to market to people who could provide jobs I enjoy doing. It took a long time for me to understand the importance of niche marketing.
