North Carolina Landscaping Company is a Finalist for Sustainability Awards

Bland Landscaping, of Apex, was selected as one of five finalists for the 2007 Sustainable Business of the Year awards in Chapel Hill.

Bland Landscaping has been selected as one of five finalists for the 2007 Sustainable Business of the Year awards in Chapel Hill.

The awards, sponsored by the Foundation for a Sustainable Community, are held each October and honor those companies that have made significant contributions in the areas of social equity, economic prosperity and environmental protection.

The Foundation, part of the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce, was formed in 2003 and is a leader in the sustainability movement by helping companies find creative solutions that improve the community’s long-term sustainability.

Companies are increasingly being evaluated not just by how much money they make for stockholders, but are being judged in the public realm by how well they adjust and contribute to society’s changing needs.

Bland Landscaping, a local Triangle firm based in Apex, is in good company. The other finalists include: Kidzu Children’s Museum, The Lantern Restaurant, Chapel Hill Tire Car Care Center, and The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group. Last year’s winner was Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. Each of these companies has found ways to improve how they operate, under the broad definition of sustainability.

For example, Bland Landscaping has incorporated metal, paper and petroleum recycling into the company’s operations, purchases a high percentage of products and services locally (including B-20 Bio-Diesel) and encourages volunteerism among employees.

The awards will be held Oct. 25 at the Carolina Club in Chapel Hill. Learn more at www.sustainablefoundation.org.
