Nursery Consolidation: Shemin Nurseries Acquires Schumacher

In a continuation of the consolidation trend in the nursery industry, Shemin Nurseries Inc. announced it has acquired Schumacher’s Wholesale Nursery and Landscaping Supplies.

DANBURY, Conn. – In a continuation of the consolidation trend in the nursery industry, Shemin Nurseries Inc., Danbury, Conn., announced June 6 that it has acquired Schumacher’s Wholesale Nursery and Landscaping Supplies, South St. Paul, Minn. This acquisition increases Shemin’s presence in the Midwest, where the company operates several locations near Chicago and Detroit, and relates to the company’s goal of expanding nationwide.

With the addition of Schumacher’s, Shemin, a large wholesale distributor of horticultural products and services, will operate 24 distribution centers in 12 different geographic markets.

Bob Rankl, president and CEO of Shemin, said "Schumacher’s is a unique opportunity to enter a new market through the acquisition of a quality company with quality people. Schumacher’s strong orientation toward customer service and industry insight will strengthen our capabilities and product offerings."

Lance Berthel, Schumacher’s facility manager, will head up the orientation and report to Ron Sentman, Shemin’s Midwest vice president of sales and operations.

Shemin Holdings Corporation – consisting of Shemin Nurseries Inc. and United Green Mark, an irrigation distributor based in Novato, Calif. – was recently formed as a wholesale horticultural distribution company. Rankl, who is also CEO of Shemin Holdings, said that Shemin’s strategy is to develop a national footprint of full service, one-stop-shop facilities serving landscape contractors nationwide.
