Most car owners realize that regular oil changes and tune-ups keep their roadsters running on the streets instead of straight into the shop. Of course, a blinking red maintenance light or a windshield sticker noting the next oil change time are always nice reminders.
On the same note, contractors who spend time maintaining their mower engines and pay attention to critical service points will cut out profit-killing downtime. Briggs & Stratton is handing out the “Next Maintenance Due” stickers and helping its dealers drop the hint to contractors through its Protection Plus program. The program is actually a selling system for dealers that includes customized materials, but its focus on regular tune-ups and engine care will help contractors who invest in equipment prolong the life of their investments.
“Protection Plus is an effective, inexpensive program that gives dealers an easy way to promote regular mower maintenance,” said Cherie Burns, marketing manager, Briggs & Stratton, Milwaukee, Wis. “Their customers are beginning to understand the value of routine maintenance – saving them from costly repairs in the future, while improving the performance of their equipment.”
The program is fairly inexpensive for dealers to offer their customers, and it focuses on communicating to contractors the importance of regular tune-ups, which ultimately will benefit contractors’ productivity. Six maintenance points the programs focuses on include:
- Extending engine life
- Enhancing equipment performance
- Reducing fuel consumption up to 30 percent
- Preventing costly repair
- Increasing horsepower up to 7.5 percent
- Reducing mower emissions up to 50 percent
