Palm Desert Turns to Drips, Cutting Out Grass to Save Water

This fall, a pilot program focusing on some of Palm Desert, Calif.'s grassy parkways could show how to solve an age-old problem in the arid Inland area.

Many in a desert turned emerald green by water can't stand sprinklers soaking sidewalks, gutters and blacktop.

It's wasting a precious resource, they point out.

This fall, a pilot program focusing on some of Palm Desert, Calif.'s grassy parkways could show how to solve an age-old problem in the arid Inland area.

Drip irrigation will replace sprinklers that often spew water broadly. More water-wise desert and Mediterranean plants will bloom in median islands. Boulders and crushed rock will accent areas between greenery.
