KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Following its initial warning Sept. 10 asking users of Bensumec™ 4LF to discontinue use of the product, PBI/Gordon Corp. has announced a complete recall of all existing inventories of the preemergent herbicide product (see PBI/Gordon Bensumec 4 LF Contamination Prompts Use Stoppage; Recall Looming). The company will pay freight costs associated with the return of inventories and will replace the returned product at no cost.
PBI/Gordon had received reports of yellowing turf on some golf greens after application of the product. Bill Brocker, vice president of marketing, said the company identified the specific cause of yellowing to be one batch of the product (lot 1286) that was contaminated with low levels of phenoxy and dicamba herbicides.
Although only one batch of about 5,000 gallons of product has been found to be contaminated, PBI/Gordon has initiated a recall of all Bensumec 4LF in the market, including inventory at distributor, dealer or end user locations. "This is being done strictly as a precautionary measure," said Brocker. "We want to assure that the product's reputation is not damaged by this unfortunate accident."
The recalled Bensumec 4LF will be replaced with new product having a new label design and a sticker for easy identification in the field (see images at right).
PBI/Gordon has asked anyone owning inventories of Bensumec 4LF to call customer service for return instructions at 800/236-5411 or 800/236-5413. The company’s corporate number of 800/821-7925 can also be used.
Additionally, the company has asked any Bensumec 4LF customer that has applied the product since August 1 to contact Gary Custis at 800/821-7925 or 800/471-3677.
