PGMS Issues Salary Survey Results

The 2001 annual salary survey for grounds personnel is now available from the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS).

BALTIMORE - The 2001 annual salary survey for grounds personnel is now available from the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS).

The report provides PGMS members with high, low and average dollar per hour paid to superintendents/managers supervisors/chiefs, foremen, equipment operators, mechanics, and permanent, temporary and part-time laborers. It also gives information relative to the number in each category receiving a bonus, life insurance, health insurance and/or a retirement plan.

 This year's survey found that the average base salary of respondents in 2001 was $54,523. Eighty-one percent reported that they also receive some form of life insurance benefit, while 94 percent receive employer-provided health insurance.

Other important data compiled by the report showed that superintendents' hourly pay rate ranged from $10.55 to $35 and that the average hire rate was $17.21. The report also reflects that the average management respondent has 21.69 years in the industry and has been in his or her present position for an average of 11.2 years. More than 60 percent of respondents have a horticulture or agriculture education background and they oversee an average staff of 15.06.
