PLANET Organizes Industry Relief Effort

The PLANET Emergency Disaster Support Program allows industry professionals to offer employment, equipment and other relief to industry companies affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane Katrina is having a devastating financial impact on the United States, particularly in the states most severely impacted: Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. In an effort to alleviate some of the financial impact, donations are pouring in from private individuals and public corporations alike, with a number of donations being made by organizations and companies in the green industry. In addition, the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) has organized a disaster support program to help put companies that want to donate supplies, labor and money in contact with affected companies that need their help.

Accessible by clicking the “PLANET’s Emergency Disaster Support Program” link on the PLANET Web site, PLANET says the program will continue to be developed “as the needs of green industry companies in the crisis area become clearer.” Anyone interested in contributing has the following options:

  • Offer Financial Support through charitable contributions to the American Red Cross, Federal Emergency Management Agency or National Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster. Keep in mind that many of these organization are only accepting monetary donations, rather than supplies.
  • Provide Temporary Jobs. Many green industry companies may have a loss of revenue for weeks or months and could be unable to pay their employees. If your company is able to provide an experienced employee temporary employment (and possibly housing) during this time, visit PLANET’s Job Site and list available job postings under the “Disaster Support Jobs Available” heading. There is no charge to members to make these postings. Non-members can e-mail their postings to jobs@landcarenetwork.org or contact the PLANET office at 800/395-2522.
  • Member-to-Member Donation. During the rebuilding efforts, affected green industry companies will require labor, equipment and other supplies to get back on their feet. If you are able to loan items to those in the crisis area, you may make an in-kind donation by going to PLANET’s Message Board and listings your offerings under the “Disaster Support – Help Needed/Help Offered” forum.
