WASHINGTON - The Environmental Protection Agency has recently opened a public comment period on the preliminary risk assessment of Dursban and Lorsban insecticides, which include the active ingredient chlorpyrifos. As part of the EPA’s Food Quality Protection Act Implementation and Reregistration Program, chlorpyrifos has already been subject to a preliminary risk assessment and is currently undergoing its own public comment period.
According to the American Nursery & Landscape Association, chlorpyrifos is one of the most widely-used insecticides with registered uses for nurseries, greenhouses, landscapes, tree and turf care, and in and around homes. Lorsban has a wide range of agricultural food and fiber uses. The ANLA stated that Dow Agrosciences, the primary registrant for Dursban and Lorsban, has already filed comments regarding what the company believes to be flaws and conservative measures in the EPA’s assessment of Dursban and Lorsban.
The ANLA is encouraging anyone who considers Dursban and/or Lorsban to be important tools in their pest management programs to send an e-mail or a letter to the EPA. The comments should include a description of the company’s business (what the company does, how many people are employed by the company and other pertinent information) and an explanation of why the company uses Dursban and/or Lorsban. Also include comments on the pesticides’ effectiveness, the role they play in the company’s pest management program, what alternatives the company uses and the shortcomings of those alternatives. The ANLA requested that comments be direct, to the point and void of harsh or inflammatory language.
Please note that comments regarding Dursban and Lorsban are due by Dec. 27, 1999. The public comment period for the preliminary risk assessment of chlorpyrifos closes Dec. 6, 1999. Use docket control number OPP-34203 in any correspondence about Dursban and Lorsban and docket control number OPP-34202 in any correspondence about chlorpyrifos only.
