GLENDORA, Calif. – Rain Bird Corp. recently announced the opening of its 2006 Intelligent Use of Water™ Scholarship, awarding $2,500 to one student to study the landscape and irrigation sciences. Awarded in partnership with the Landscape Architecture Foundation, an organization dedicated to the professional development of those involved with landscape architecture and its related sciences, Rain Bird’s Intelligent Use of Water Scholarship is dedicated to furthering the education and training of those who are committed to water conservation.

In existence for more than 25 years, Rain Bird’s Intelligent Use of Water Scholarship was established to recognize an outstanding landscape architecture, horticulture or irrigation science student. The scholarship was recently increased to the $2,500 level.

Rain Bird notes that applicants eligible for the scholarship include students who have completed two years of undergraduate studies and have demonstrated their commitment to the above professions through exemplary scholastic achievement and participation in extracurricular activities. The students must be enrolled in their third or fourth year of study with aspirations to utilize technology and research to find better ways to conserve water in the landscape science fields. Past winners have ranged from established landscape professionals seeking further education to new students just discovering the field.

“This scholarship is important as it brings awareness to the landscape design field and the educational aspects of how to best utilize our natural resources,” said George Dahl, the 2005 winner of the Intelligent Use of Water Scholarship. “We need, as an industry, to be more aware of the impact the landscape design field has on the environment and this scholarship falls in line with how Rain Bird is fulfilling this need.”

The Intelligent Use of Water Scholarship’s $2,500 award can be used to further the educational needs of its winner. More information and instructions to apply for the scholarship can be found at the Landscape Architecture Foundation Web site (www.laprofession.org) under “Scholarships.” Applications will be accepted until Feb. 15, 2006 and a recipient will be announced in April 2006.

In terms of extracurricular activities, Heather Kraus, Channel Relations Manager for Rain Bird, says applicants should demonstrate a commitment to the profession by participating in professional organizations or having a background in the green industry. “However,” she notes, “it is the thoughtfulness of the essay and understanding of his or her opportunities to bring about The Intelligent Use of Water in the profession that sets the recipient apart from other students who are applying.

“Rain Bird sees the Intelligent Use of Water Scholarship as part of its commitment to educating landscape design professionals on how to use water efficiently and intelligently,” Kraus adds. “This scholarship is a way for Rain Bird to give back to the industry and to teach the next generation of landscape professionals how to best use and conserve this most precious resource.”
