Rain Bird Announces 2006 Xerigation Contest

AZUSA, Calif. – Rain Bird’s Landscape Drip Division today announced the opening of its 2006 Xerigation^® Design and Xerigation Installation contests. Acceptance of entries for both contests began March 1, 2005. Winners and their families will receive a seven-day, six-night trip to take part in the 2006 Rose Parade^® and Rose Bowl^® festivities. Winners will also be invited to visit Disney’s California Adventure^™ Park, attend a New Year’s Eve dinner and dance and participate in decorating Rain Bird’s Rose Parade float

Introduced in 2004, the Xerigation contests focus on promoting efficient design and installation principles through the use and specification of low-volume irrigation equipment. Entries will be accepted nationwide for the site design incorporating the best use of Rain Bird Xerigation/low-volume irrigation products and for the best overall installation of Rain Bird Xerigation products. Additionally, contractors can now receive Rain Bird Reward Points just for submitting an entry.

Entries for the Rain Bird Xerigation Design contest are judged on the following criteria:

• Water efficiency and proper use of low-volume irrigation products
• Variety of Rain Bird Xerigation products used
• Problems solved or obstacles overcome
• Aesthetic appeal
• Design creativity

The 2005 winners of Rain Bird’s Xerigation Design were Randy Boudrero and Craig Widmier of MHTN Architects, Salt Lake City, Utah, for their design and construction of the landscaped Davis Campus of Weber State University (WSU) in Layton, Utah. MHTN Architects used Rain Bird Landscape Dripline to irrigate all the shrubs and groundcover plantings, which constituted 25 percent of the WSU – Davis landscape design. In doing so, Boudrero and Widmier estimated they saved over 765,000 gallons of water in one month alone. This was a 48-percent savings over the campus’ traditional landscape water use.

Contractors Sid and Salle Morse of BIO Landscape & Maintenance, Houston, Texas, were chosen as the 2005 Xerigation Installation winners for their installation of Landscape Dripline.

The 2006 Xerigation Installation contest winner will have the best installation of Rain Bird Xerigation products. The winner will be determined from all entries based on:

• Proper use of low-volume irrigation for application
• Variety of Xerigation products used
• Problems solved and/or obstacles overcome
• Creativity
