The pain at the pump has gotten progressively worse over the past few weeks.
Triple A reported the statewide average was $2.32 for a gallon of regular unleaded. That's up $0.34 from February.
"Ultimately--and this is the way it works all the way around--they're going to level out but right now it's very volatile," said Michael Fields, Executive Director of South Carolina's Petroleum Marketers Association.
Fields said the increase can be expected as companies switch to a pricier, summer blend that's more environmentally friendly during warm weather months. He said gas stations are also struggling to keep up with the increase in wholesale prices.
"A lot of folks misunderstand--this is not the major oil companies that own these gas stations on the corner," Fields said. "It's a small guy, a business guy. They're feeling the pinch just like consumers are."
As a landscaper, gas customer Daniel Swygert regularly fills-up more than just four wheels. His lawnmowers, weed-eaters, and other equipment need weekly re-fueling as well.
"When you run a business and everything runs off gas you spend $300 to $400 a week in gas," Swygert explained.
He said he's looking forward to the day when gas prices decline again, but Fields says he believes $1.90 a gallon is the lowest gas prices can be expected to go.
