Evans, 43, replaces Chris Nagel, who was named executive vice president of the company's North America consumer business after President and Chief Operating Officer Robert F. Bernstock left.
The company announced Bernstock's departure on Tuesday, citing "differing views of long-term strategy." Nagel is 44 years old.
Evans, a 12-year veteran of the company, most recently served as senior vice president of finance and global shared services.
Scotts North America, which sells the Scotts and Miracle-Gro brands, accounted for 68 percent of the company's $2.3 billion in sales in 2005.
The company's shares were recently down 89 cents, or 2 percent, to $42 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
