AMES, IA -- In Fall 2008, Becker Underwood, an international developer of bio-agronomic and specialty products, announced it would adopt greener, more environmentally-friendly packaging for its Sprint chelated iron products. The change came in an effort to offset increasing costs of raw ingredients and packaging materials, while providing the same high quality Sprint chelated iron products to the professional turf and horticulture markets.
Earlier this year, Becker Underwood began shipping its 50-pound Sprint 330 and Sprint 330+Mn products in recyclable corrugated cardboard boxes designed for easier-handling and storage. Beginning in September, the five-pound Sprint 330 product in newly packaged pre-printed recyclable bags began shipping to distributors. The new Sprint 330 five-pound bags are packaged in sturdy, handler-friendly boxes that now contain six bags per case.
The change results in an overall weight reduction in packaging materials of almost 42 percent and space requirements on a per-pallet or per-case basis have been reduced by 33 percent.
Customers save on shipping costs from the reduced packaging weight, and the company sees an improvment in warehouse space utilization.
Plans for the future include recyclable, pre-printed paper bags for Sprint 138 product packaging.
