Shemin, The Landscape Supply Co., based in Danberry, Conn., is teaming with Housatonic Habitat for Humanity to fund the construction of an entire house for a deserving Connecticut family.
As part of its fund-raising efforts, Shemin is holding a golf event at the The Club at River Oaks in Sherman, Conn., on Sept. 11. The company chose this date because it felt it was a good day to have people thinking about building and helping others feel safe.
The event will feature a round of golf, meals for the day, give-aways, golfing contests and a live auction. “Our hope is to raise money for Habitat while providing a fun-filled day for the participants,” says Rose Hurlbut, the coordinator of the event at Shemin.
She also said that many area golf courses have donated foursomes for the fundraiser’s live auction. The proceeds of the golf event are going towards Shemin’s overall goal of raising $100,000 for the Housatonic Habitat for Humanity. This is the amount that would support the construction of entire house for a deserving local family.
Habitat for Humanity is a partnership of widely diverse people who build homes for the inadequately sheltered. This creates self-reliant families and enriched communities. Housatonic Habitat renovates and/or builds simple, comfortable homes in partnership with people of compassion and future homeowner families.
Construction is a partnership between volunteers and the future homeowners. The homeowners work 400 sweat equity hours and buy the home with a no-interest mortgage over 20 to 30 years. The mortgage payments always go back to the fund and are used to build more houses. Habitat homes are built to physically enhance their neighborhoods. At the same time, caring and compassionate volunteers working to fulfill the Habitat mission enrich communities.
The Habitat mission is supported with tax-deductible donations of money, property, material, in-kind services and volunteers.
