Some people prefer the brute strength and power capabilities of full-size skid-steer loaders. Others enjoy the compact size and access capabilities of compact utility loaders. However, contractors should be careful not to replace one type of equipment with the other, since applications require different equipment needs. Dan Kilgas, marketing category manager, Ariens, Brillion, Wis., outlined the best applications for each type of equipment:
Situations best served by a full-size skid-steer:
1. Working in wide-open areas where speed and zero-turn ability help get the job done faster
2. Planting big trees where a large auger is required
3. Using a soil preparation attachment that requires a large hydraulic flow to power the unit
4. Using a large backhoe attachment that can dig 10 feet deep
5. Moving a large volume of material from place to place in a short period of time
6. Using a tree spade to transplant trees
Situations best served by a compact utility loader:
1. Working in tight areas between buildings where you need to install underground wires or pipes
2. Planting small trees in confined areas
3. Preparing flowerbeds or shrubs
4. Leveling dirt in confined areas
5. Tilling the ground in small confined areas
6. Moving small rocks in a flowerbed
7. Backfilling a trench in small confined areas
