After withstanding torrential rainfall and wind gusts up to 90 mph generated by Hurricane Gustav on Labor Day, Skinner Nurseries Biloxi location is back open for business. Gustav made landfall as a category 2 hurricane approximately 140 miles southwest of the branch. The branch sustained no damage, flooding nor loss of material, as the staff had completely prepared for a more severe outcome.
“We prepared for the worst, but luckily we avoided the major thrust of the storm. Our team did not take this threat lightly and diligently prepared the branch. I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts,” stated Mike Callecod, branch manager for Skinner Nurseries Biloxi.
In the wake of what appears to be a very active hurricane season in 2008, three more named storms are lining up in the tropics that could impact the southeast in the coming weeks.
“Our thoughts are with our customers and suppliers that have been hit by the storm in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. We wish them a quick and safe recovery. Our business purpose is to be reliable and the core values of our company are based upon resiliency and being prepared to meet the challenges of our business,” stated Kevin Van Dyke, President of Skinner Nurseries.
Skinner Nurseries provides a wide range of plant material from annual color, shrubs, large trees and palms to a full line of hardlines, including mulch and soil. Skinner Nurseries is a leading supplier of green goods in the south with 21 distribution centers.
