New research is being conducted on the genetics of floral fragrances.

Basis research, funded in part by the American Floral Endowment, is providing genetic insights into the genesis of fragrance in flowers. Dr. Natalia Dudareva at Purdue University is conducting research, using snapdragons as a model flower. She has examined the emittance of fragrance from 50 varieties and isolated two genes that are critical to the formation of compounds that give fragrance to snapdragons. The results of this research are summarized in Special Research Report No. 408 and is available on the American Floral Endowment Web site: www.endowment.org For additional details on this study, contact Dr. Dudareva at dudareva@hort.purdue.edu
