Sod-layers and landscape contractors are getting a break from the Lexington, Ky. Water Conservation Appeals Board.
In a meeting yesterday, the board agreed to allow sod and new landscaping to be watered all day on the day it is laid. After that, it can be watered only on certain hours and days set out by the current restrictions on outdoor water use.
Outdoor watering is allowed only from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and between 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., on alternate days according to the last numeral of an address. Odd numbers can water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Even numbers are allowed to water Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. No outdoor watering is allowed on Monday.
Two weeks ago, the board had agreed to allow sod to be watered every day, but only for the week after that decision. The new rule is valid only for the next week, when it will be reviewed.
Kentucky American President Nick Rowe told the board that the Kentucky River is rising because of rain in Eastern Kentucky, but that the restrictions need to stay in place until at least next week. The utility draws Lexington's water from the river.
Lexington police Assistant Chief Ronnie Bastin told the board that police have received 108 calls about suspected illegal watering and have issued eight citations. Those cited face a fine up to $250.
