South Carolina-based full-service landscape management firm Southland is starting scholarship and internship programs with Spartanburg Community College (SCC).
Beginning this May, students from SCC’s horticulture program will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the landscaping industry. Student’s participating in the program will learn a wide variety of skills that will include landscape maintenance, working with irrigation systems, installing landscapes and applying pesticides and fertilizers.
“Hands-on experience is invaluable in the horticulture industry,” says Jason Bagwell, SCC’s horticulture department head. “Working alongside industry professionals like Southland will give students the opportunity to experience real-world applications in a high-quality work environment. It will be a tremendous asset to every student both in the classroom and as they begin their careers.”
In addition to the internship program Southland will offer a $1,000 scholarship to one SCC horticulture student. The Southland scholarship is established through the Spartanburg Community College Foundation and will be awarded annually in the fall.
“We are pleased to be able to partner with Spartanburg Community College as a participant in their internship program,” said Don Pottieger, president of Southland. “In the same spirit, Southland Landscape Corporation is proud to be able to provide a scholarship for students who wish to enter into the green industry and study horticulture at this fine institution.”
