Cheryl Boyer, a senior in the horticulture and landscape architecture program at Oklahoma State University, is the winner of the 2003 Stihl Inc. Scholarship.

A senior at Oklahoma State University has been recognized by the Associated Landscape Contractors of America as the winner of the 2003 Stihl Inc. Scholarship.

Cheryl Boyer, a senior in the horticulture and landscape architecture program at OSU, received the $1,000 grant at the 27th annual ALCA Student Career Days. Boyer plans to pursue her master’s and doctorate degrees in horticulture. Her long-term goal is to share her passion for horticulture with youths as a professor in higher education.

"This scholarship will greatly aid me in beginning and completing my graduate degree, as well as allowing me to continue my active role in the departmental clubs and organizations," Boyer observed. "I've been blessed with scholarship support in the past and I appreciate (Stihl's) consideration."

Attending her third ALCA Student Career Days, Boyer was among more than 700 other landscape design and horticulture students in Raymond, Miss., participating in the gathering of potential landscape employees.

With a GPA of 3.8 in her major, Boyer balances school, work and extracurricular activities with ease. Outside of the classroom, she is pursuing real world experience in horticulture. For the past two summers, the senior worked as a Global Positioning System data technician, mapping plant materials for OSU's Botanical Garden and Arboretum and has provided landscape consulting for the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce.

Boyer has spent her time in college, fine-tuning landscape skills to prepare for a successful future in the industry. She has served as the secretary of OSU's ALCA student chapter, taking on leadership roles in all aspects of the chapter – specifically, spearheading various fundraising projects to help defray the costs to send an OSU team to Career Days.

Stihl's national training manager John Keeler presented Boyer with the scholarship check on behalf of the Virginia Beach. Va.-based company.

"We take great interest helping along America's brightest landscaping talent," Keeler explained. "Ms. Boyer's scholastic achievements, work-related internship experiences and volunteer involvement deserve recognition. On behalf of the 1,000 employees of Stihl Inc., our 12 regional distributors and over 8,000 independent servicing dealers, we congratulate her and wish her well in our industry."
