The Target Corporation has been fined $68,000 for selling a lawn fertilizer in Colorado containing a pesticide not registered in the state.
The Colorado Department of Agriculture levied the fine against Minneapolis-based Target for selling Scotts Bonus S Weed and Feed Fertilizer.
Target stocked 40 bags of the product containing atrazine at a Silverthorne, Colo., store last spring. The agency says the product killed the lawns of homeowners who used it.
Officials say Target cooperated with the investigation and was only required to pay $10,200 of the fine.
