Grubs: Third Instar Coming Shortly
Many of the Japanese beetle and masked chafer grubs are entering or currently in their 2nd instar (Instar definition: developmental stage between molts; for example from egg hatch to first molt called 1st instar). Developmental progression is rapid at this time with these grubs entering shortly their 3rd instar. To give you an idea of the size change, grubs in the 3rd instar are 30 to 50 times the body weight of 1st instars. Third instar grubs can cause visible turf damage.
