THE IMPORTANCE OF READING LABELS. Pest- and disease-control product labels dictate the types of acceptable application techniques, the recommended rates, whether the product can be mixed with other chemicals and more. A careful review of the label will ensure you're applying the product in the best possible way.

If more than one application method is listed on the label as acceptable, choose the method that will get the most amount of product where you want it. You want to maximize target-specific applications and minimize off-target effects.

To maximize the effects of the products being applied, make applications during the most vulnerable stage of the target pest's lifecycle. Often the label will include the best times of year to apply the product for the best control of various pests. Whenever possible, only apply products to areas known to be affected by the pest you're treating.

In addition to applying the right product in the right way, having the right equipment will also make the most of each application. Make sure your equipment is in good working order and calibrated properly.

When tank-mixing, ensure the chemicals being mixed are compatible.

Before applying the product, check the site to see if any sensitive areas, such as streams, lakes or wetlands, are nearby. To make sure the product you're applying stays where it's meant to be, don't make applications when it's raining, when there are heavy winds or on frozen ground. When spraying, leave a buffer strip between the site and any bodies of water. Also take care to minimize applications in areas where groundwater is high.

Of course, always follow the label for recommended application rates. The label also has instructions for properly disposing of any excess products.
