Frost Doesn't Equal End of Season
Even with the arrival of frost and the associated slowing of turfgrass growth, mowing should be done until the turf ceases growth. Letting the grass grow long prior to winter can cause the leaves to matt enhancing the severity of winter diseases such as Microdochium patch (pathogen: Microdochium nivale). Conversely, do not scalp the turf to stunt growth. The loss of leaf tissue will reduce autumn fall photosynthesis. A potential result in the plant is not storing enough carbohydrates going into winter. Regarding weeds, broadleaf weed control is still advisable during this time of the year. As long as the weeds are growing, herbicides can be absorbed and translocated in the plant.
