POST CONTROL OF CRABGRASS? The hot temperatures that most of the eastern United States has experienced this summer has been quite favorable for crabgrass germination and growth. Currently, crabgrass is in the several tiller stage and is a major “turfgrass” component in many lawns in the transition zone. A difficult decision faced at this time is whether to try to kill the crabgrass with a post-emergent herbicide or wait until the first frost to kill the crabgrass.
Some suggestions if a post-emergent herbicide crabgrass is to be used. Know the crabgrass species. Some post products work better on certain species. Evaluate the amount of crabgrass. In extreme situations the crabgrass population may be so high that it is actually the “turf”. You may want to consider this in your treatment decision. The last decision is will the lawn be reseeded. If a herbicide is to be used, check when reseeding can be done.
