TechNotes Sept. 25: Sod Webworms, Green Goods Popularity, Soil Temperatures

TechNotes are provided by Syngenta GreenCast.

Sod Webworm Adults Take Flight

Sod webworm adults are emerging in many homelawns in the northern United States. These moths are obvious during the first few weeks of September.  The whitish-brown moth is triangular shaped when at rest. The adult moth normally will orientate itself head down the leaf blade with its body and wings oriented at a 35 to 45 degree angle from the leaf. This gives the appearance of a dead rolled up leaf. Homeowners when walking or mowing their lawns often get concerned when these moths pop-up and flutter around. A large population of adult moths does not mean that there is a sod webworm problem.  On high cut turf like homelawns, sod webworm damage rarely occurs unless caterpillar populations are extremely high.

Green Goods Should Be Top Sellers

Plants will be at the top of shopping lists this fall, according to the 2006 Fall Gardening Trends Research Report from Garden Writers Association. Leading items for fall gardening purchases will be fall flowers (cited by 25 percent of respondents), indoor plants (24 percent) and perennials (21 percent). When buying plants this fall, 35 percent of households said their primary criterion was buying for spring. Buying plants to extend fall color is the selection criterion for 27 percent of households. The report also offered insight on indoor gardening. Lack of time is the reason 30 percent of households give for not doing more indoor gardening. Limited space is an obstacle for 27 percent of households. Lack of knowledge was reported by 11 percent; lack of light by 9 percent.
