In the southern most areas closest to the gulf coast region from Texas to Florida the potential for crabgrass germinating is increasing. February is generally the month in which crabgrass germinates. Although soil temperatures are still relatively cool from Houston through Orlando, preemergent herbicide treatments in these areas will normally need to be applied probably in the next couple of weeks.
Broadleaf weeds like dandelion are active in the same region (southern gulf coast) and post-emergent herbicide applications should be considered.
For the major turfgrasses used in lawn situations, January is the time when most of these grasses achieve their greatest freeze tolerance.
