Spruce spider mites have been hatching over many parts of the Midwest. This mite is most active in the spring when daily temperatures remain between 55 and 80 F. The mites will often feed on the conifers in the spring but yellowing of the needles may not become apparent until summer when environmental stresses enhance the symptoms or damage.

Cool wet weather diseases are apparent on many homelawns in the Midwest and northeastern United States. The primary diseases are Helminthosporium leaf spot, red thread and rust. Red thread and rust are primarily found on perennial ryegrass. Helminthosporium is generally characterized by a leaf lesion that is bleached-out in the center with a purplish border. Rust appears as a yellowish orange color while red thread is easily diagnosed by the “red threads” protruding from the leaf blade. With rust and red thread, these diseases usually are most apparent on turf that is growing slowly.
