Continued wet conditions through the Midwest and Eastern United States has resulted in continued turfgrass growth. With wet conditions mowing is often delayed. Proper mowing requires that no more than 1/3rd of the leaf blade be removed. Removing in excess of 1/3rd of the tissue greatly increases the chance for scalping. During this period of wet, relatively cool weather frequent mowing should be done when possible.
Broadleaf weeds and thistle are thriving in areas where cool wet weather is occurring. Treatments may need to be done to control these weeds. Red thread and melting-out continue to be problems on perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass.
Bronze birch borer adults are (or have) emerged throughout the Midwestern and northeastern United States. If a preventative insecticide is to be used, it needs to be applied before the adults lay eggs.
