The Home Depot announced that it will be donating $500,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund in an effort to provide relief and rebuilding support to the areas devastated by the recent Indian Ocean tsunami.

“I know that all associates at The Home Depot share my feelings of sympathy and concern over the devastation that this tragedy has wrought,” said Home Depot President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Nardelli. “Our company has continually been a leader in helping with disaster relief and rebuilding efforts due to the devastating tsunami in Asia Pacific. In addition to the company’s initial donation, The Home Depot Foundation also has created a fund-matching program for associates’ donations between $25 and $1,000.

The Home Depot encourages customers of all of its companies, including The Home Depot, The Home Depot Supply and The Home Depot Landscape Supply to join in the relief effort and make donations to the American Red Cross and other organizations. The company’s relief plans will continue to evolve as the needs of affected areas are determined.

DISASTER RELIEF AGENCIES

The Home Depot reports that, as with any disaster, the company looks to disaster relief agencies for recommendations on the best way to assist those in need. Because those agencies are the primary channels for delivering donations and products to the impacted areas, The Home Depot takes direction from them as to where and how to give, and is directing vendors to those organizations, in turn.

The Home Depot advises individuals and companies that wish to contribute to the tsunami relief effort to consider the following organizations, which are taking such donations:
